SASSA Long - Weekend Grant Payments Revised

SASSA Long – Weekend Grant Payments Revised. In a recent update, the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has announced revised payment schedules for its long-weekend grants, coinciding with the upcoming Easter holiday.

Revised Payment Details

As of April 1, 2024, SASSA has implemented adjustments to its payment structure, aiming to address the evolving needs of beneficiaries. These revisions come amidst ongoing discussions regarding the adequacy of social relief grants in the face of rising living costs.

March Disbursement Dates

SASSA has confirmed disbursement dates for the month of March, running from Monday, March 25th to Friday, March 29th. Notably, Good Friday, falling on March 29th, marks a significant point in the Easter long weekend.

SRD Payments Reminder

It’s essential for grant recipients to note that the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) payments for the upcoming week remain at R350, contrary to the anticipated increase to R370 announced by the Finance Minister for late April disbursement.

Scheduled Long-Weekend Grant Payments

Following the Easter long weekend, SASSA’s long-weekend grant payments are scheduled as follows:

  1. Wednesday, April 3, 2024: Older Persons Grants at R2,180 (over 60) and R2,200 (over 75).
  2. Thursday, April 4, 2024: Disability Grants at R2,180.
  3. Friday, April 5, 2024: Children’s Grants including Child Dependency at R2,180, Foster Care at R1,180, and Child Support at R530.

Addressing Grant Concerns

The revised SRD grant, with its marginal increase, has prompted criticism from social society groups advocating for a more substantial adjustment to match inflation. A coalition of NGOs urges the Department of Social Development to reconsider the proposed amount to better support the 8.5-million beneficiaries.
