List of fake NSFAS mobile apps and FB pages targeting applicants and students. In response to a surge in fraudulent activities targeting students and applicants for funding in 2024, the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has issued a stern warning. Although NSFAS has already provisionally approved 76,000 online applications since the application period began on November 21, scams have also increased.
Fake NSFAS Mobile Apps
In an effort to enhance the application process, Blade Nzimande introduced a new NSFAS mobile app with biometric capabilities. However, scammers have exploited this development by creating fake NSFAS apps. On its official website, NSFAS lists these fake apps, emphasizing that the authentic student bursary app has not yet been released.
Bogus Facebook Page Alert
A fake NSFAS Facebook page titled “NSFAS ASSISTANT & ENQUIRIES” has surfaced on social media adding to the list of scams. Students are tricked into sharing their NSFAS bank card login details by this page, which poses a significant financial security risk. This page falsely claims to be an official NSFAS page that assists students with financial matters.
Caution Against Paying for Application Assistance
A concern has been raised by NSFAS that an individual is charging applicants between R4,000 and R5,000 to complete and submit their applications in the Cape Town area. Application fees and information related to applications will not be charged by the bursary scheme. Applicants are strongly advised against engaging with individuals claiming to offer such services.
NSFAS Reminders for Applicants
To ensure the safety and security of applicants, NSFAS emphasizes the following reminders:
- Never share personal information, especially banking details or MyNSFAS portal login credentials.
- Be cautious of unofficial channels claiming to represent NSFAS, especially on social media.
- NSFAS does not charge any fees for application submissions or information provision.
- Report any suspicious activity to the official NSFAS channels.
Conclusion
As students eagerly pursue educational funding opportunities, it is crucial to remain vigilant against scams and fraudulent activities. By staying informed and following NSFAS guidelines, applicants can safeguard their personal information and contribute to a secure application process.
