SASSA Grants Increase in April 2024
The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) will distribute grant payments to millions of beneficiaries in April 2024. Beneficiaries of all social grants distributed by SASSA can look forward to increased grant payments during this period.
Announcement of Increases
In February 2024, Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana announced the 2024 SASSA grant increases during his Budget Speech. This announcement included increases for all permanent SASSA grants, aiming to bolster financial support for vulnerable individuals and families across South Africa.
Breakdown of Increases
Godongwana confirmed significant increases for various permanent SASSA grants, including the Older Persons pension grant, Disability grant, War Veterans grant, Care Dependency grant, Foster Child grant, Child Support grant, Child Support grant Top-Up, and Grant-in-aid.
- Older Persons, War Veterans, Disability, and Care Dependency Grants: An increase of R100 was announced, with R90 effective from April and R10 effective from October.
- Foster Care Grant: An increase of R50.
- Child Support Grant: An increase of R20.
- Projected Expenditure: For the 2024/2025 financial year, the government’s planned expenditure on grants includes allocations for various categories, such as old-age grant, social security funds, child support grant, other grants, provincial social development, and policy oversight and grant administration.
SRD Grant Increase
The Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant, commonly known as the R350 grant, has also been increased. Minister Godongwana announced this increase on March 13, 2024. Beneficiaries will witness an increase from the current R350 to R370 starting April 1, 2024, reflecting a rise of R20 or 5.7%.
