Good News for SASSA Beneficiaries This Month

Good News for SASSA Beneficiaries This Month. This week brings a wave of positivity for SASSA SRD beneficiaries as they receive an increase in their monthly grants, effective from Thursday, April 25, 2024. This welcome boost comes as per the directives of Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana, following the February 2024 budget speech.

An Increase in Monthly Grants

From April 2024 onwards, SASSA SRD beneficiaries will witness a bump of R20 in their monthly grants, pushing the Social Relief of Distress Grant to R370. This augmentation aligns with the South African Social Security Agency’s initiative to enhance grants across the board this month.

First Increase Since the Pandemic

The R20 increment for cash-strapped SASSA SRD beneficiaries marks the first such rise since the grant’s inception during the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020. While any financial assistance is crucial for the millions of South Africans striving to make ends meet, civil rights organizations assert that it falls short of addressing the pressing economic challenges.

Inflation and Cost of Living Concerns

The disparity between the cost of living and escalating inflation in Mzansi surpasses the increments in salaries and grants. Consequently, the purchasing power of Rands diminishes each month. Civil society advocates argue that the National Treasury’s modest increases for SASSA SRD beneficiaries are insufficient. They urge for a substantial increase of R90 to bring the grant to R440 per month, aligning with inflation rates.
