What Benefits Does NSFAS Offer Students?

Students in South Africa can take advantage of NSFAS (National Student Financial Aid Scheme) benefits to support their access to higher education. The following are some of the key benefits that NSFAS offers to students:

Additionally, NSFAS covers the following expenses for students attending national universities:

Tuition fees:

The National Student Financial Assistance System will cover the course fee at any university, vocational training facility, or college if the student has a good academic record and passes all the modules in the course material.

Generally, NSFAS covers only university residence accommodation and does not cover any private accommodation costs if students exceed university residence accommodation costs

Up to 40 km away from a university, students will be eligible to receive funding, usually R10 000 a year.

Living allowance:

Every student receives R14 400 a year as a living allowance

Book allowance:

Students will receive a R5 000 book allowance each year

A TVET student’s tuition and fees will be covered by NSFAS for the following reasons:

The average annual salary for urban students is R24 000, while the average annual salary for students living between the city center and the outskirts of the city is R18 000, and the average annual salary for rural students is R15 000.

Students traveling up to 40 kilometers from their institution are covered, with a budget of R10 000 per year.

Personal care allowances:

Personal care costs R2 750 per year.

Personal care budgets:

In catered residences, students receive R2 850 per year for personal care

The maximum length of an NSFAS loan will be five years, depending on funding availability. If a student changes their course of study and takes more than five years to graduate, they are responsible for paying for their own studies.

Students can benefit from these benefits when it comes to pursuing their educational goals and creating a brighter future for themselves and their communities.

Nsfas Advantages And Disadvantages

Nsfas Advantages And Disadvantages

Check out NSFAS’s advantages and disadvantages

Advantages of NSFAS

NSFAS offers the most obvious advantage of covering all courses at training facilities, tertiary education institutions, and vocational schools. The student receiving the funding must continue to perform well academically and pass all modules to be eligible for full coverage.

It is important for students to understand that NSFAS covers only residence accommodation, such as university residences, and private accommodations must be paid by the student. In addition, only transportation costs will be covered if a student travels 40 kilometers to his or her educational institution. There is also a living allowance and a book allowance with NSFAS, but there is a limit. This student recently received a generous living allowance of R14000 and a book allowance of R5000; these amounts should cover most of his or her expenses.

Disadvantages of NSFAS

NSFAS has the major disadvantage of not being available to all students interested in studying in South Africa. Students may also find it difficult to manage their funds while still in school because funds can take a long time to disburse on a regular basis. Most students should be able to avoid this problem if they manage their finances well.

As NSFAS covers only a limited number of postgraduate degrees, it cannot guarantee that a student’s chosen course of study is covered.

Getting funds disbursed to orphan students will also be a challenge because secondary documents must be signed by the social worker.

Do We Have to Pay NSFAS Back?

NSFAS is a funding scheme that is based on loans because it is a loan-based scheme. A change was made to the system in 2018 when it was converted into a bursary-based one. Therefore, if the student received NSFAS prior to 2018, the funds will have to be repaid. You do not have to repay the funds if you received them after 2018. Additionally, even if the student must repay the loan, one of the biggest advantages is that these funds do not have to be repaid during the study period.

Additionally, students who pass their first and second years of studies can convert up to 40% of their NSFAS loan into a grant. If a student passes their final year of study, they may be able to convert their loan into a grant. After graduating from a public university, students will be able to defer their interest charges until they have graduated from it.

A full bursary will be awarded by NSFAS to TVET college students. These students will not have to repay any funds, regardless of when they received them.
