Are Post Offices Going To Stop Paying SASSA Grants at Some Point? A recent announcement from the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) and Postbank has brought about significant changes to the method of distributing social grants. One of the key changes is the discontinuation of cash withdrawals for Sassa grants at Post Offices, leaving beneficiaries with questions about the transition.

SASSA Grants

Sassa disburses social grants to approximately 19 million financially vulnerable individuals each month. These grants encompass various categories, including the Older Persons pension grant, Disability grant, War Veterans grant, Care Dependency grant, Foster Child grant, Child Support grant, Child Support grant Top-Up, and Grant-in-aid.

The Phasing Out Plan

In a joint statement, Sassa and Postbank unveiled plans to phase out all physical cash payment points, including cash withdrawal services at Post Offices. The implementation of this plan is scheduled to begin in January and conclude by the end of March 2024, affecting Sassa grant beneficiaries.

Non-Cash Services at Post Offices

While cash withdrawal services will be discontinued, Postbank assures that Post Offices will continue to provide non-cash services, such as card reinsurances, PIN resets, and statement printing.

Reasons Behind the Change

The decision to cease cash availability at Post Offices is driven by the financial struggles of the Post Office, which has incurred a substantial R6 billion loss over the past three years. The business rescue plan includes closing 420 loss-making branches, retrenching 6,000 employees, and potentially receiving a R3.8 billion government bailout.

Alternative Withdrawal Options

Sassa grant beneficiaries are advised to use their Sassa gold cards at ATMs or retail stores like Boxer, Pick N Pay, Spar, Shoprite, Usave, and Checkers for cash withdrawals. The transition also allows for purchases at retailers with a point of sale and cash-back functionality.

Validity of SASSA Gold Cards

Contrary to concerns, Sassa announced an extension of the validity of gold cards beyond the initial expiration date of December 31, 2023. This ensures that beneficiaries with expiring cards can continue to use them for Sassa grant payments.

Communication on Card Replacement

Sassa and Postbank will communicate specific dates for replacing expired cards, ensuring a smooth transition for beneficiaries. Clients who have not made changes to their payment methods should still expect to receive their grants on their Sassa gold cards.

Conclusion

The shift away from cash withdrawals at Post Offices marks a significant change in how Sassa grants are distributed. Beneficiaries are encouraged to familiarize themselves with alternative withdrawal options and stay informed about the upcoming card replacement process to ensure uninterrupted access to their grants.
